Pottsville, PA

Pottsville, Pennsylvania, is home to America’s oldest operating brewery, D.G. Yuengling, founded in 1829, a survivor of Prohibition, and still brewing fine beer. However, Pottsville also, almost, had a beautiful post office. Architect James K. Taylor created this lovely Italianate villa for Pottsville circa 1899…

… but instead, perhaps to save money on materials or please a local supplier, Taylor’s design was rendered in red brick, as we see in the postcard below, circa 1916…

And then, to rub salt in the wound, this halfway lovely post office was replaced, circa 1930, by the horror below:

Pottsville, you deserved better.
