Buffalo, NY

The Buffalo Post Office drew criticism for its cathedral-like ornamentation and 244-foot pinnacle tower, but to those who worked inside, the windows five stories above the central workroom floor caused the most distress. One clerk wrote, “the light, filtering through the dust-laden skylights, was so poor that the clerks became as myopic as the Prisoner of Zenda as they sorted letters.” (Kudos to this anonymous clerk for his literary allusion to Anthony Hope’s 1894 novel.)
