Quito, Ecuador

PO Quito ECUADOR

I realize this is a little far afield, but it’s an interesting story: In the early 1920s, Ecuador wanted to put its new Quito post office on a stamp, but they hadn’t built it yet. So they had the American Bank Note Co. print a stamp bearing the image of an imaginary post office. In 1927, after the government finished the building in Quito, they had the American Bank Note Co. do a second stamp with a picture of the actual post office. And so there are two Quito post office images from that era, one imaginary, one real.
